In 1922, all of the rural primary schools for white kids were closed in the Trappe area and the students taken to the new High School building on Main St. Black kids still walked to their scattered, rural schools.
Many of the old one room school houses were moved or recycled and used for other purposes. The old school at Landing Neck (see photo 641) was moved 2 1/2 miles to Ivytown where it reportedly was in use until a few years ago as a house. Trappe's 1883 primary school (photo 634) was remodeled into the house at 29441 Maple Ave.
However, moving old school houses was not without incident, as seen from the article below, which recounts the perils of moving the old Ferry Neck school to St. Paul's Church in Trappe to be used as a parish hall.
The mover almost got the building wedged between two telephone poles on Main St.
