Defender Packing Co.
Anthony Bennett Adams, Sr. and his brother George Francis Adams established this tomato cannery just north of the town of Trappe around 1910. Anthony took over the business and named it Defender Packing Company in 1913. Defender Packing Co. remained in the Adams family and continued to can tomatoes at this location on the corner of Rt. 565 (Old Trappe Rd.) and Backtown Rd. until about 1950 when the tomato canning operation was moved to the factory on Lovers Lane. The old red factory, as it was commonly known, is shown in this circa 1950s Photo along with part of Defender House, the old water tower, smoke stack, and farm related buildings and barn.
