Black Peoples daybook
Black Peoples daybook
Account book titled " 1820 Black Peoples day Book" from the Barnett farm (now called Milan Farm) Island Creek Neck, Trappe, Md. It's hard to read with all the scribbling on it , but the cover also reads " Phill Chaplain to 5 days Work in harvest..."
During harvest, slaves were often put to work on neighboring farms with the wages going to their owners. Free Blacks also found work and the money they earned was charged against goods purchased on credit.
One of the pages reads " 1820 Decr. 14 Black man by the Name of Phillip Chaplin to Sixty Six Pound of Pork @ five cents and half..."
